Grape Up was part of a successful Dojo project for a German insurance company that specializes in the provision of business-to-business insurance. The client’s strategic decision on the roadmap was to install Pivotal Cloud Foundry on AWS. Or in other words, to simplify application development and deployment.
The team working on the entire installation comprised developers from 4 different companies involved in an on-site Dojo that lasted 8 consecutive weeks. For those not familiar with the term, a Dojo project is a physical space where engineers work together on the Cloud Foundry platform, and the project usually takes from 6 to 12 weeks. Our role was to act both as team members as well as educators for everyone else involved.
Since the company’s main products are online insurance plan calculators, the main goal was to achieve maximum simplicity. And because the calculators are used worldwide, there was a different calculator for each country separately. Therefore, three different environments on 3 separate and independent accounts have been implemented.
The first one was a sandbox environment created for developers to write code that „plays” only within that environment. The second one, a non-production environment for testing capabilities, customizations, configurations, etc. And the last one, a production environment, where the applications were actually put into operations and available for end users.
As a matter of fact, the biggest challenge was to prepare the entire platform for an external security audit which was necessary for the final push to production. However, thanks to our meticulous precision and close cooperation with other teams, the work went smoothly and we got along very well. The Grape Up team conducted daily stand-ups which were frequently attended by the client’s employees - mainly developers who wanted to broaden their knowledge about the project.
Unprecedented reliability and scalability is an undisputed advantage that derived from the project. It is worth noting that we eliminated any downtime which used to occur before the Dojo and make the app unavailable for users for short periods of time.
"It takes 10 years to build a company’s reputation and few minutes of cyber-incident to ruin it. That's why the security of our solutions is so important." – said Maciej Staszczyk, System Engineer from Grape Up.
